Do squirrels act that way because of noise from the car?

Question

July 16, 2009

I had read some time ago that squirrels get hit by cars so often when they are obviously fast enough to get out of the way and often run in circles or back and forth in front of the car assuring their doom and that the reason for the strange behaviour is that the sound from the car, duplicated by the researcher confuses the squirrels ability to avoid getting caught/hit, they end up running back and forth and get hit.

Answer

I would think that squirrels aren't sure of the danger of an oncoming car, as well as not being able to judge the speed of the car is a major reason many get run over. A good parallel is the judgment of a young child who darts out into the street.

I've never seen squirrels in the street running in circles. Instead, they seem not sure of whether to proceed or to turn around and run back. I've seen the same indecision when approaching a squirrel with my dog.

As far as the research on the noise of the car affecting their behavior goes, it certainly sounds interesting and may be another factor in how act. I know that beeping my horn really gets them moving.

Squirrel carrying other in its mouth

Question

April 9, 2009

I live in a rural area and have grown up with wildlife and thought I had seen almost everything, but just today I noticed an adult squirel
carring another adult squirel in it's mouth. The "carrier" dropped it's passenger and ran away. When I approached the one being carried it did not run away, it lay there and looked at me then moved in between my feet as if in shock, and it did seem as if it had an injury to it's tail. My dog then revived it by chasing it under our air conditioner. Could this have been a mating pair or could this have been a territorial issue?

Misty - USA

Answer

I've heard of squirrels helping another injured squirrel. Mating pairs will groom each other, so that might be another motivation to help if the squirrel was injured.

If it was territorial, it would be a quick fight and the loser would run away.

Squirrels are intelligent, complex animals, and we don't understand everything they do. The best we can do is guess from previous observations.

German Shepherd attacked smaller terrier

Question

July 7, 2008

hi this is about dog behavior and violence because last Friday my mum said a woman at work had seen a German shepherd rip a Yorkshire terrier into bits in front of its owner and that was in northdown park in margate and that is where we normally walk our dog but know we don't go anywhere near it and its a shame because she loves going there
(excuse my spelling)

Toni - USA

Answer

Certain breeds of dogs can be very aggressive, especially towards other dogs that they think are infringing on their territory. Most communities have laws that dogs must be on a leash, unless in a designated dog park area.

It is a terrible thing that the German Shepherd attacked the smaller dog. I'm sure it's owner was terrified. I would hope your community has laws against that, such that the owner of the German Shepherd will be punished.

Also there is a concern that if a dog will attack a smaller dog, that it may also attack a small child or even an adult. Your mother should contact the authorities to tell them about your concern about your personal safety and that of your dog in the park. They should prevent the owner of the dog from having that German shepherd in the park.

Father complains about son's body piercing and stuff

Question

April 14, 2008

Okay, you tell me that sound will not travel through a vacuum. Then how does sound get into the cranial vacuum we see in punkers? It is massive transmission seen in the hardware department we see dangling off their lips, tongues, ears, eyebrows, and places that only a urologist/gynecologist/proctoligist has any business examining? Or is there a mechanism at work I do not yet understand -- such as high explosive compression waves, and the fact that only a liberal application of dynamite would dislodge the mess found in their closets?
To the contrary, I have seen some air-heads who should be able to pick up hypersonic sound but as long as I try to talk to them, they seem to be off in a plane that rational persons cannot achieve.
I have gambled on Megadeth CD's for my son, but I wish that he would develop a taste for classical music. Should I play it safe or go for Baroque?

Answer

Teens want to be different than their parents and also to be just like all their friends. For the life of me, I can't see what is attractive or cool about all this gruesome body piecing and ugly tattoos, but it is a fad that will hopefully go away in a few years. Some of it is trying to be unique and have an identity, but yet not to be too unique--like being different than all the other kids.

As far as the mess in the room or closet or goes, that has been a complaint of parents since kids got their own rooms. The problem now is that teens get too much stuff from indulgent parents. Or they get too much money so they can buy an excess of things.

Note that some of the depressing music teens listen to can affect their attitudes on life. The best approach is to aim at music appreciation. Talk about which songs in your son's music are well-done and which are poorly done. Point out that there is good and bad music in every genre, so that he may even try to listen to something else. Sometimes even a country music song becomes a hit with young people.

Hopefully, your son will outgrow all this stuff in a few years and that you will live through it.

Provide list of different types of behaviors

Question

August 4, 2007

Can you please provide me with a list of different types of behaviors.

Kimberly - USA

14159

Answer

Behavior refers to the actions or reactions of an object or organism, usually in relation to its environment. The classification of types of behavior depends on what school of thought and behavior theory is followed. It's really impossible to list the types without a more specific context.

How can I deal with Directors and Thinkers style people?

Question

July 13, 2007

What I need to pay attention to Directors and Thinkers style people if I have to work with them? How I can try to get the best results together with them? I think that I am Relaters style person.

Koski - Finland

14064

Answer

The most popular model of personality profiles is the DISC Profile. There are others, such as the one Alessandra uses, but you will find the most literature on DISC.

There are books and online sources that go into finding your own style, determining the style of others and then dealing with those styles effectively.

See http://www.onlinediscprofile.com/ for more information about the subject.

Why do we move our arms when we walk?

Question

December 20, 2006

why do our hands moves simultaneously as we proceed forward?

Tirtha - Nepal

12658

Answer

There are two reasons. One is that the natural motion of walking causes the freely hanging arms to swing in opposition to the motion of the legs. If you tied ropes with weights on them to your shoulders and then walked, they should swing similar to your arms.

The second reason is that the motion of you arms helps your balance somewhat. Try walking with your arms help close to your sides or moving them in an opposite direction than is normal. You do not lose your balance, but it is very awkward.
