What Would I Do if I Were Brave?

by Ron Kurtus (revised 11 February 2005)

Courage and bravery are admirable character traits. Being held back by fears or doubts can prevent you from getting things you want, from doing things and going places, and from living your life to the fullest. An inspirational song If I Were Brave by Jana Stanfield reflects these thoughts and shows what could happen if only you were courageous and brave enough to try.

Questions you may have on this are:

This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz near the end of the lesson.

Being brave

Being brave or courageous is an important character trait. Often, people will not do things they would like to do, because they are afraid or have self-doubts. It is important to dream of what you really want and then go out and just do it.

Song lyrics

This message is given in the lyrics of the song "If I Were Brave" that was written by singer Jana Stanfield along with Jimmy Scott. Jana often sings the song in her concerts. The lyrics are presented here with the permission of Ms Stanfield.

Listen to song

You can listen to the song while you read the lyrics.

Part 1

What would I do, if I knew that I could not fail?
If I believed, would the wind always fill up my sail?
How far would I go? What could I achieve,
trusting the hero in me?

Chorus

If I were brave, I’d walk the razor’s edge,
where fools and dreamers dare to tread.
I'd never lose faith, even when losing my way.
What step would I take, today, if I were brave?

What would I do today, if I were brave?
What would I do today, if I were brave?

What would I do today, if I were brave?
What would I do today, if I were brave?

Part 2

What if we’re all meant to do what we secretly dream?
What would you ask, if you knew you could have anything?
Like the mighty oak sleeps, in the heart of a seed,
are there miracles in you and me?

Bridge

If I refuse to listen to the voice of fear,
would the voice of courage whisper in my ear?

What would I do today, if I were brave?
What would I do today, if I were brave?

What would I do today, if I were brave?
What would I do today, if I were brave?

Actions

Be brave. Don't be held up by fears. Instead, act to achieve your dreams.

In conclusion

If you are brave or courageous, you can achieve things about which you dream. You feel better about yourself. You have an admirable character. The lyrics to the song If I Were Brave can inspire you to be brave and courageous.
