Question

May 15, 2009

Can you explain me fractional distillation

Saptarshi - India

17747

Answer

Fractional distillation is the separation of a mixture into its component parts, or fractions.

For example, your could distill a mixture of water and ethanol by heating it to about 75 degrees. Since ethanol boils at 78.4 °C and water boils at 100 °C, the ethanol will turn to a gas, leaving the water as a liquid.

Does a mixture absorb or release heat?

Question

September 14, 2007

does the mixture absorb or release heat?

hafizuddin - Malaysia

14396

Answer

A mixture is simply mixing materials together that can later be separated. There should be no heat gained or released.

But if there is a chemical reaction as a result of the mixture, then heat can be released. If the materials require heat to cause the reaction, it is absorbed.

You need to separate the act of making a mixture from causing a chemical reaction.

Air pollution from automobiles is a mixture of soot particles and a solution of various gases, water vapor and acids. Since it varies so much, you would consider it heterogeneous. Improving gasoline mileage, improving engine efficiency, reducing the number of automobile on the road, and changing to electric cars are some ways to reduce pollution.
