Son is smart but disruptive in school
Question
November 10, 2009
My son is 7 years old and is in 1st grade and is in a class with 25 students.
He is very smart and is reading beyond 1st grade level. He gets good grades in all subjects. While the other kids are learning to read sight words Philip learns them so fast that the teacher now has him learning to spell them as well as an extra challenge.
The problem is that he is always losing recess time due to talking and making noises and humming and whistling (I am very musical - he gets this from me) and generally being "wiggly" - and a distraction to the other students. He did fine his first year of preschool but then had this problem with the pre-k teacher (I switched him to another school with at least 1/2 the students in that class and he thrived there). He also had trouble in kindergaten.
When I asked this teacher if this could be a symptom of boredom she responded that he is not working up to his potential as he rushes through work and doesn't follow directions.
He hates school (he never said that before this year) and says he doesn't want to go.
He can forever concentrate on anything which interests him. He is very intelligent and interested in other folks and has lots of friends and makes friends everywhere he goes. My friends love having him over to play with their children and cannot understand why he has trouble in the classroom. His sunday school teachers cannot understand this either.
He is no longer on the same discipline plan as the rest of his class - he is 2 steps beyond that plan. She tried a colored strip plan and now is trying a points sytstem. Not working...
The teacher and guidance counselor are starting down a road of suggesting ADHD(asked us in a conference if we've taken him to the doctor about his behavior and mentioned a "checklist"). We know there is nothing wrong with our son. We have tried every punishment in the book: sitting in his room til Papa gets home, no sweets, losing privileges, taking away time with friends, etc......
I believe that he is too immature for a classroom setting and that he should be homeschooled until he is more mature. My husband is not crazy about this idea. I feel it is just unfair to everyone to continue trying to "fit a square peg into a round hole"!!!
I am writing to you to see what you think we can do to encourage better behavior in class. Is the fact that he is losing recess enough or should we be doing more punishment when he comes home?

It is often very difficult for a smart child to remain engaged in a class that is going to slow for him. The child can get bored and start doing things that can be disruptive. Also, many boys like more physical activity and tend to squirm in structured study environments.
However, your son does seem to exhibit some traits similar to ADHD. See our articles on dealing with students with ADHD for more information on it:
http://www.school-for-champions.com/education/hyperactive.htm
http://www.school-for-champions.com/grades/hyper_characteristics.htm
http://www.school-for-champions.com/grades/hyper.htm
The problem with ADHD is that teachers and doctors seem to classify many overly active boys as ADHD and want to prescribe medication for them. Your son doesn't seem to warrant such treatment.
It would be really good to put him in a study environment where he is challenged, such that he will work up to his ability. You might check around to find if there are some schools that offer special education for advanced students.
He shouldn't punish him for his behavior in school. It doesn't seem that bad. Instead, try to find things that he has been doing well and encourage him to do even more. You want to encourage him to have pride in what he does, as opposed to rushing through his work.
One thing he could do is to go beyond what the teacher has assigned. You might check to see if the teacher could get some extra credit work for him to do.
When I was in the fifth grade, we moved to a different neighborhood and I changed schools. I quickly got into trouble in that class, so they assigned me to a different class for "troublemakers". This class consisted of both fifth-graders and sixth-graders, so the lesson time was split. In class, I quickly did the fifth grade work, and then listened to the teacher teach the sixth graders. Then I did their work too. I took both exams and got an "A" on both of them. This extra challenge was a turning point for me in that school. I returned to the regular class the next semester and did well from then on.
I think you have a good boy and it sounds like a smart boy. Being punished for not behaving properly in school will just turn him off to it. Instead encourage them to do better and to do things that will make you happy. Kids want to please their parents. Homeschooling might work, or you can find a school that has special education classes for a brighter students.
Have patience and give your son plenty of love. I'm sure he'll turn out fine.

Are you interested in selling your site?
Question
October 22, 2009
Hi. Was checking on your site School-for-champions.com, and it seems pretty cool and wondering if you might be interested in selling it.
We are looking to buy some sites for 8 to 18 months revenue (which is usually equivalent to around 2-3 years of profit when you take into account salaries), depending on a few factors (such as how reliable the revenue is).
Let me know if this is something you would consider
Thanks!

What you have to realize is that when you run a business meeting, you are not giving a speech or required to put on a show. Instead, you are simply facilitating the meeting and coordinating things so that it runs smoothly.
Before the meetings, check with your boss concerning what items he wants to be covered and who should give what reports. Then write up an agenda and give everyone a copy before the meeting. It is good to both email the agenda and also distribute hard copies at the meeting. Or you can have a PowerPoint slide of the agenda.
Then, you can call on people and coordinate any discussion. The burden is on the others to provide input. If you need to give your status report, it is easy to do once the initial butterflies go away during the meeting.
This is a great opportunity to get "face time" with your boss' boss. If you set things up in a professional manner, the meeting should run itself.
Best wishes in running some successful meetings. Let me know how things turn out.
Had dream of somewhere I have never been
Question
October 18, 2009
Hi, about my last dream, I don't live anywhere near there. I live in New York that's very close on the boarder line of Pennsylvania, and I actually never heard of the city Otto Eldred, where I'm from is Binghamton N.Y. and it's not a big city, there's only like 47,000 people here. And yes I remember every dream I ever had, I actually have a good memory like it's photographic. It's weird I even have memories of something that I believe is true but it's hard to tell cause it just pops into my mind whenever. And lastnight I had that one dream again where I was in a horse riding accident. I dreamt that same thing again! I didn't think it was possible to have the same dream twice? but I guess t's possible. What does that dream mean?

Answer
It is great to have a photographic memory, because it can be useful in learning things for school and such. But also, you need to have more dreams to sort out and organize the things you remember. This includes clarifying your dreams and subconscious thoughts.
I used to have a dream about an airplane accident a number of times over several weeks. But then it went away. Such an accident never did occur,
Writes dreams as comics
Question
October 17, 2009
Hi I got your last message and I do write mu dreams down, but I do it differently, I draw them like comics and I draw them exactly how I see it in the dreams, people tell me all the time I should be an artist, and yes, I had another dream, that's why I'm writing here. My dream this time was 3 dreams in 1, the first was about our house again being haunted and I got up at 6am for school, and somehing happened I don't know what it was but something weird just happened and I went to yell out to my mom that "There's a demon, we have to leave this house now", before I could say that, I woke up, went back to sleep and dreamt I was on my laptop here and I was telling my mom about "Selena", and she asked me who that was and I said "It's Selena Quintanilla" and that I was listening to some songs called "Dreaming of you", and "If I could fall in Love", then it made me think of MJ (Michael Jackson), I wasn't ever a fan of him, I never knew who he was until he died and they mentioned him a million times, so in my 3rd dream in 1, after hearing those songs in my dream and made me think of MJ, I dreamt that Michael was singing on stage, and his kids Prince, Paris, and blanket were at the Neverland ranch, and that I was singing some MJ's songs which I don't even listen too, and that MJ heard me sing his songs and he waslistening to me sing and at the end of it he said "Good job Paris", and I was like "thanks daddy", then I realized what I just said and I was like "what the..." and then I woke up. What does itmean to have 3 different dreams continue from where the last 1 left off?

Answer
That is a cool idea to put down your dreams as comics. It is sort of like the manga comics that are from Japan.
Why is it that a haunted house always has demons and not nice ghosts? I never could figure that out.
Some dreams are your mind being creative. So if it is repeated, it is like your mind trying to improve the story. Other dreams are sorting out things that have happened. If they weren't sorted properly, they may be repeated. And finally, some dreams can be predictions of the future.
Had some weird dreams last night
Question
August 9, 2009
Hi, I had another weird dream last night on the boarder line of a realistic nightmare and a very crazy out of nowhere dream. I dreamt that me and another girl were at the parking lot of the store "Big Lots" and there were 6 open spaces and for no reason me and the other girl surrounded those 6 spaces with stuffed toys so people can't park there, then I had another dream that me and my parents were at a fair and we rode the "Twist and Twirl" ride then me and my mom rode something else I think it was similar to the fairis wheel but it wasn't a faris wheel, and my dad was watching us from the exit, and the ride went up high up in the air and back down to the ground, and a guy in front of us told us that there was going to be a storm and he said "I'll bet 5 bucks that the earth will show the better of itself and pick a cow up off the ground", and then the ride took up high p to were we could see the valley below and in the dream I saw a dead cow about 10 to 20 feet in the air. and it wasn't storming or nothing, then when we got off the ride my mom told my dad what the guy ahead of us said and then I woke up. isn't that a weird dream?

Answer
Not only do you have weird and interesting dreams, but they are also so vivid in your mind. Most people will have a dream and then forget it by the time they wake up. But you really seem to be able to remember your dreams.
It probably is better than going to the movies.
Lyrics to my song
Question
June 11, 2009
hey, I wrote a song based on a real life story about someone, here's my song in case you wanted to read it:
Homeless Heart:
Lonesome stranger
with a crowd around you
I see who you are
you joke
they laugh
till the show is over
then you fall so hard
if you're needin'
a soul to soul connection
I'll run to your side
when you're lost in the dark
when you're out in the cold
when you're lookin'
for somethin' that resembles your soul
when the wind blows
your house of cards
I'll be a home
to your homeless heart
open close me
leave your secrets with me
I can ease your pain
and my arms will be
just like walls around you
come in from the rain
if you're runnin'
in the wrong direction
I will lead you back
when you're lost in the dark
when you're out in the cold
when you're lookin'
for somethin' that resembles your soul
when the wind blows
your house of cards
I'll be a home
to your homeless heart
broken
shattered like a mirror
in a million pieces
sooner or later
you've got to find
somethin' someone
to find you and save you
when you're lost in the dark
when you're out in the cold
when you're lookin'
for something that resembles your soul
when the wind blows
your house of cards
I'll be a home
to your homeless heart
when you're lookin'
for somethin' that resembles your soul
when the wind blows
your house of cards
I'll be a home
to your homeless heart
I'll be a home
to your homeless heart
okay, that was one of my songs.Angela - USA

Those are good lyrics to a song. Do you have someone who can write the music to your song and perform it? Or do you plan to do that yourself?
One suggestion is that you should always put your name after the title and even say it is copyrighted. For example:
"Homeless Heart"
by Angela (copyright (C) 2009)
That gives the song some protection.
Best wishes with your song writing.
I dream of becoming a professional football player
Question
May 28, 2009
Hello. My name is Declan and I dream of becomming a Professional Football player. Can you help me?
Declan - Ireland

Answer
Besides talent and skill, you need dedication and determination to become a professional football player. By all means, get every opportunity you can play the game. It is prefer bold to play with others who are better than you, because in that way you can learn and improve your skill. Playing with poor players can make you seem like a star, but you also can learn bad habits.
Study the game. Watch the top players, and analyze their moves. Don't go to a professional game simply to have fun, but instead go to study the strategies of the professionals.
Try to get it chance to speak to coaches, as well as top players, to ask them for tips and pointers about how to play better.
Hold onto your dream. If you can picture yourself as a professional football player, your chances for success are greater. Best wishes in achieving your dreams.

Answer
After the US saw that the Russians were installing missile in Cuba to protect against US invasion of Cuba, President John F. Kennedy made threats against them. But he also worked with the United Nations Secretary-General U Thant to reach an agreement with the Soviets to dismantle the missiles in Cuba in exchange for a no-invasion agreement.
Everyone was worried that there would be a war, but after the Russians took back their missiles, there was peace. In conclusion
