How can I keep my mind from forgetting things?

Topic: General

Question

June 11, 2013

I'm out of school now and I was wondering how can I keep my mind from forgetting things I learned in school, or how to just keep it active.

Abe - USA

Answer

It is good to review materials to keep your mind sharp. You can also look into subjects you will be taking next Fall.

The Khan Academy is a good source. They have free video lessons on various subjects.

You can also check your local library for books of interest. Simply reading something interesting can keep your mind active, as opposed to watching television.

Best wishes on a good summer.

Thank much for dis opportunity. Am writen a book on human character. So please is dere any contribution dat u can render or any sugestion to make my book looks matured? Thanks!!

Wilfred - Nigeria

Answer

Human character is a fascinating subject. Look at my section on Character to get some ideas on the subject.

In writing a book, it is important to define who your intended audience is. You should also write a short description of your book to help define your purpose. A synopsis is important to define the book in your mind, as well as to sell the idea to publishers.

Best wishes for success in your new book.

Good student but teachers not teaching

Topic: Avoid Failing

Question

February 12, 2013

I am an eight grader, I am in FFA and I am very busy because of my place in my chapter. Also, on five teams and in high school band. I am a very busy and good student. I am an ace in school. I score high in history and English. I struggle with math and a bit with science. I am failing math because I have a teacher who is lousy and she doesn't explain math nor does she spent anytime with the class. Just one student who has a learning disability. I understand that student needs her time but the teache only pays attention and teaches that one student. I have a 46 in my math Class. I am struggling. with math. Since I am failing I can't can compete nor attend practice. I have been very hard the past two weeks and my grade hasn't come up much. I am struggle in most of my class because I have to teach nearly everything to myself since my teachers haven' t taught me at all this year. I don't know what to do. My parent both agree with me about my teachers. They aren't being the teachers. My mother told me I guess you will just have to struggle though this year and hope to do better next year. I will be a freshman next year and I really needed this year to be my successful teaching year to catch up on what I struggle with.

Answer

Congratulations on being in so many extracurricular activities in school, while still maintaining good grades. However, you might have to back off on some of the activities to spend more time on math and science. You certainly do not want to fail in math. A failing grade would most likely affect your activities.

Some teacher struggle trying to teach students with learning disabilities, such that they neglect the other students. Also, I'm guessing that your teacher isn't too good in math, and that is why she doesn't do a good job at explaining things.

One thing to do is to ask the teacher if she could suggest some outside resources that you could use to improve your understanding. Note that you should not blamer her, but simply say you want to look further into the subject.

There are a number of good resources in various subject on the Internet. It is worthwhile using them to get a better understanding and perhaps practice tests and such.

I have Algebra lessons that may give you a background on the subject.

Also, you might talk to some friends about working on homework together. Sometimes you can learn more when you help each other.

Don't give up, and don't blame the teachers. Just try to do your best. You know you have what it takes--as well as the energy--to succeed in your classes.

Topic: General

Question

February 2, 2013

I usually get good grades but sometimes i even fall to C , I want to stick to A. My weakest subject maths, science, french and english

- India

Answer

The classes you mentioned all have rules and laws to remember. It is good to know those rules.

Evaluate why your grades dropped to a C. Was the work too hard, or did you get side-tracked and did not study properly? It is good to know why you got the C, so that you can correct your studying and get back to top grades.

Best wishes for all A's in your classes. I know you can be a top student.

omer - Ethiopia

The fact that you want to be a great student is a good start and already puts you ahead of many other students. Make a list of your courses and the grade you would like to get in each of them. Put the list where you can see it when you study, This solidifies your goal, and helps remind you of what you want to get.

Teachers give hints about what is important to study and what will be on the tests. Knowing this helps you emphasize and focus your work. You want to study the right things. It is studying smarter.

Look over our lessons on getting good grades and the ones that apply to you. They should help.

Answer

What you have is what is called "test anxiety". It is similar to the problem some people have in giving a speech before an audience.

You want to be able to go into an exam with a degree of confidence, realizing that you may not know everything, but you are prepared enough to figure things out and do the best you can.

One way to overcome test anxiety is to practice taking tests and working under the pressure of time constraints.

Take a look at the lessons on Knowing how to take tests. You should get some good tips that will help you.

Best wishes on doing well in your exams. I know you can do it.
