Sample Quality Policy Manual (Using the Rationale Approach)
by Ron Kurtus (revised 1 June 2002)
A Quality Policy Manual should state the goals and policies that a company or business has toward maintaining consistency and order within its various operations. Following the ISO 9000 standards format is useful because it gives a good viewpoint on important factors for typical company operations. It is also essential if the company wishes to gain ISO 9000 registration.
Including the reasons or rationale for the various policies is very useful in getting buy-in from workers and managers, as well as to allow for logical adjustments to the policies when conditions or beliefs change.
Questions you may have include:
- Is manual available as Web pages?
- Is manual available as a PDF file?
- How can I use it?
This lesson will answer those questions.
Manual available as Web pages
The following Quality Policy Manual can be used as a sample of one following the rationale approach. It is by no means the only way to present company policies--and may not even be the best way--but it should give you an idea to help you develop your own policy manual.
You can look at the Manual section by section as Web pages.
Start with the Table of Contents.
You can also download the whole manual as a PDF file, but it is probably better to look at the Web version first to see if this manual is for you.
Manual available as PDF
The manual is 33 pages long and is in the PDF format, which is an industry standard for longer online documents.
You need an Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the PDF document. Acrobat Reader may be downloaded for free from Adobe.
If you aren't sure whether you have the Reader, download the manual first and try to open it. If you don't succeed, you will probably need to download and install the Acrobat Reader.
Download Adobe Reader, if necessary.
In most systems, you must download the manual to view it. In some systems you can simply view it. The file is 85 K in size, so it should not take too long to download or open.
Since the manual is 33 pages long, you may want to print it out.
This is a sample manual and has no guarantees--stated or implied. Feel free to use the manual as a guide or reference. Note that it is based on ISO 9000 version 1987. There are minor differences between that version and the latest, so you should take that into account, especially if you are seeking certification.
If you do use the material, I would appreciate knowing about it for the sake of reference. Also, feel free to make any comments or state opinions about the material.
A sample Quality Policy Manual, based on the ISO 9000 standards and using a rationale approach, is available for download.
