Some people feel that a simple magnetic field can enhance health and healing. But the magnetic field from an electromagnet powered by AC current or other electrical devices may be harmful to a person's health. That type of field is called EMF. It comes from high power lines, television sets and other electrical appliances. Some doctors say that EMF may have a subtle affect on a person's health.

On the other hand, other doctors say that since everyone is exposed to EMF, there really isn't any evidence that it is harmful. Thus, it is hard to tell.

Can the electromagnet be affected by the quality of the core?
Can the core be a permanent magnet or an iron rod?
Will this affect the magnetic field of the electromagnet?

Answer

Yes, the type of material used in the core affects the property of the electromagnet. Usually, soft iron is used, so you can turn the magnetism off and on.

Using a permanent magnet for a core will not really increase the magnetic strength of the electromagnet. And of course, you cannot turn off the magnetic field. Certain types of iron or steel work better for that.
