Is there enough information for my project?

Question

November 15, 2009

I AM ABOUT TO DO A PROJECT ON MAGNETS I HOPE THE INFORMATION FROM WEBSITE WILL BE ENOUGH INFO. THANKS FOR INFO.

QUAN'TERRIO - USA

18669

Answer

Define what you want to achieve in your project. Do you want to demonstrate the properties of magnets? Do you want to show how you can make iron or steel into a magnet? Do you want to show how to detect magnetism (like with a compass)?

There are a number of things you can do, so it is good to pick one and tell what you plan to do. That is something teachers are looking for.

Best wishes in your project.

How long it takes magnets to lose their charge?

Question

October 23, 2009

i am designing something involving magnets. i need to know how long it takes magnets to lose their charge if they are made to repel each other frequently. i know the time will vary depending on the type of magnet. but i am curious to know how long it takes on average for a permanent magnet. thanks alot look forward to hearing from you.

Jonathan - USA

18566

Answer

A permanent magnet will not lose its strength, no matter how much you use it. Heat and dropping the magnet can cause it to lose its strength. Artificial magnets gradually lose their strength a normal temperatures, due to the molecule movement. Electromagnets use soft iron and lose their strength as soon as the current is turned off.

Why does the north pole of a magnet point to the North Pole?

Question

September 27, 2009

When like poles repel, then why the north pole of a magnet point towards the north of the earth which has its own north pole?

Mahesh - India

18392

Answer

The N pole on a magnet is really called the north-seeking pole. Not calling it by its correct name causes much confusion.

Does the size of a magnet affect its strength?

Question

September 26, 2009

does the size of a magnet affect the strentgh of a magnet ?

teaira - USA

18391

Answer

Some large magnets are very weak. The strongest are neodymium magnets, which are smaller than a penny in size.

Where were magnets first found?

Question

August 23, 2009

(1) Electromagnets lose their magnetism if you put them in the refrigerator?

(2) Magnets were first found in China?

- Singapore

18189

Answer

Magnets can lose their strength if heated. An electromagnet usually needs electricity to keep its strength, so it is possible that it would lose a little if cooled, but not much.

Magnets were found both in Greece and in China about the same time.

How strong can a magnet get?

Question

April 28, 2009

How strong can a magnet get when it comes to holding strength and how much pressure can a magnet make when pushing two magnets with the same poles together(ex.pushing a north pole against another north pole)?

Garrett - USA

17671

Answer

Some Neodymium super-magnets can lift a piece of iron weighing over 1000 pounds. In general a Neodymium magnet can lift 500 times its own weight. Pushing two such magnets together N to N could require a force of 300-500 times their weight.

Can a super magnet harm you?

Question

April 19, 2009

Is having a piece of a super magnet in your pocket harmful for you? Also, I understand that in order to keep all the power of a magnet in one point is to cut the magnet in a close section. Thanks.

AL - USA

17631

Answer

It is know that magnets to have an effect of the body, but it is unlikely that having a super magnet in your pocket would be harmful to you. However, it could cause trouble if it was brought close to a credit card in your wallet or if you put a thumb drive in your pocket. Information could be erased from the magnet.

I don't believe that cutting the magnet would help to keep its power. Instead, the jarring effect of the cutting process could actually cause the magnet to lose power.

What happens to the magnetic field if there is a notch?

Question

April 6, 2009

What happens to the magnetic field of a bar magnet if it has a nitch cut out of it? Do you know of any sources covering this situation?

Ken - USA

17565

Answer

There would be a slight distortion of the field, but it would average out a short distance from the notch. Magnets are made in all sorts of shapes, so this would be just a minor variation.

There is software to visualize the shape of the magnetic field in various situations at: http://www.vizimag.com/

TV burned out during lightning storm

Question

October 19, 2008

One question: that surge protector you mentioned. do you know of any brands or name of devices? i have to find out what are they called in Danish, since my TV and computer monitor burned out during the storm i mentioned earlier. it will definitely be a great idea to have some sort of protection. i don´t believe my building has a lightning rod.
Again thanks a million!

Julian - Denmark

17461

Answer

Most stores that sell home computer equipment also sell electrical surge protector devices. That should also be true in Denmark. They have a circuit breaker that will trip from a high voltage surge, thus protecting your equipment. If lightning strikes somewhere nearby—even on a telephone line—they provide protection. But if it hits directly on your building, the power is sometimes too great for even the surge protector. In a severe storm, it is a good idea to unplug your equipment.

Since there seems to be such a problem in your area, it is good to check with local computer and electrical people for advice on what they do for protection.

Best wishes in handling this problem.

Do magnets attract or repel in a vacuum?

Question

February 6, 2009

Hi.I have this question:

Do magnets attract / repel in a vacuum?

Thank you for your time and expertise.

Dave - Australia

17218

Answer

Magnetic fields travel through vacuums and empty space. Scientists have sensitive instruments that can measure the magnetic field from the Moon and from the Sun.
