Trying to stop noise from trucks on highway

Question

February 11, 2009

I live near a 4 lane highway and the trucks noise from jake brakes and tire noise is clearly heard in the lower part of my home. I am looking for some suggestions on installing a sound fence or panels near my home and then using shrubs to conceal the fence.

I am also wondering if I can buy a sound wave killer, one that emits a sound out from the home and breaks up the incoming sound waves/

Thank you for any suggestions.

Answer

Unfortunately, there is not "sound wave killer device" available that would solve your problem

Panels, fencing or a wall can help. Shrubs not only hide the fencing but add to the sound absorption.

There are some good suggestions from people in similar situations at:

I hope that helps.

Stopping a loud PA system

Question

April 20, 2005

if in the class room there is a PA system that is broken, in the sense that all the announcements are really really loud, how can that be fixed??? we have tried to cover that hole with a paper, but it doesnt seem to work that well. do you suggest any other cheap material that is practical to tape on a ceiling that will do the job??

shaista - Canada

Answer

First of all, you should notify the school administration or building maintenance of the problem. They are the ones who should really fix the problem.

You could get some scrap acoustic tile to tape over the speaker hole. Or try several layers of corregated cardboard from a box. You could even put some rags in the hole before you tape the cardboard to muffle the sound. Of course, it may make it hard to hear.

But still, check with the school people before you do anything, to avoid problems from them.

Putting something on the wall

Question

December 30, 2004

Will A parachute hung from the ceiling and down the wall half way do anything for reflected sound in a empty club 36 X 22? Does parachute material do any thing for reflected sound? Thanks Ronald

Ronald - USA

Answer

Anything cloth or soft on the walls will reduce sound reflections and echos in a room. Thin material like a parachute only muffles the sound slightly.
