Daughter failed hearing test
Question
January 11, 2006
Hello, my 4 year old daughter flunked her 4 year hearing exam. They said she could only hear at 20 decipals and should be hearing at 25 -30 at 4 years old.
We saw an Ears, Nose, Throat specialist and he gave us the same prognosis. He wants us to come back in 6 months for a re-check. If everything is the same or worse then there would be addt'l testing done.
The Dr. said that she is only 4 years old and that most 4 year olds test sporadically. Some children could hear at 30 decipals and some can't.
Of course I am dumb-founded by this.
My daughter has excellent speech, she has never had any ear infections. She did puncture her ear drum when she was 2 years old but I have been told by the specialist that this does not have anything to do with this.
The only thing I have noticed is that when she was in ballet class, the teacher was talking to the girls and the girls had their backs to the teacher, there was low music being played and my daughter did not hear the instructions corretly.
I've spoken with her teachers who say they have not seen anything unusual but will keep an eye on her and let me know if they see anything.
I'm not sure if I should just sit and wait for the follow-up 6 month exam or should I take her for a 2nd opinion. The last thing I want to do is have my daughter think there is something wrong with her if there's not...
Please advise.
Thank you.

Answer
Your daughter may have slightly lower hearing ability in one or both ears. That should not affect her life any more than if she became slightly nearsighted. It is good to have a follow-up test to make sure the hearing level does not drop. Hopefully, it will even go up a little.
This is one of many health issues you can have with your daughter, so I wouldn't feel stressed about it. And certainly don't let her start to worry about her hearing.
Since she's only 4, your don't have the problem of her listening to extremely loud music yet. That can be very damaging to the hearing, especially when using headsets.
I hope your daughter's hearing test is better in 6-months. Best wishes in good health for her.
