Why can't we hear a dog whistle?
Question
August 2, 2009
Why we don't hear a dog whistle properly?
Thanks
Florencia - USA

Answer
There is a limit to the range of frequencies that humans can hear. We can't hear very high frequencies, probably because there is no need for us. But a cat or dog needs to hear high frequencies to hear noises made by small animals that are their prey.
A dog whistle makes a sound at a frequency higher than a human can hear but still within the range of a dog's hearing.
What is the range of sound?
Question

What is sound range?

Answer
The range of sound depends on the loudness and conditions. A sound from a high hill or mountain can travel many kilometers.
Why do girls have a higher pitched voice than boys?

Why do girls have higher pitch of voice than boys?

Answer
Note that most male animals also have deeper voices than the females. For example, a male dog has a deeper bark than a female.
One reason this is true in the animal world is because the deep male voice is intended to scare off intruders, and the higher pitch female voice is to be soothing to their babies. The same is somewhat true in the human world.
Science project on pitch
Question

What are the hearing ranges for the following?
cat
dog
deer
I need to know for a science project me and my friends are doing with an ultrasonic tone generator.
Thank You,
Kristin

Answer
The hearing ranges are:
cat: 45Hz - 64,000Hz
dog: 67Hz - 45,000Hz
Deer are not as easy to test. One range is from 500Hz - 16,000Hz, while other test say their peak hearing is 2000Hz - 6000Hz. These studies were made in designing deer whistles to put on cars.
Note that in doing your tests, you need to keep the volume the same or at least note it. Cats and dogs can hear very low volumes of sound, like from squeaks of mice under the ground.
Best wishes in your project. Let me know how it turns out.
Can one ear hear high pitched sounds better than the other?
Question
August 19, 2008
I read somewhere that high pitched sounds are picked up better by one ear over the other (the right one I think). Is this true?
thank you,
Joe - USA

Answer
I would be surprised if that was the case under normal conditions. Physically, the ear mechanisms are the same, and I can't see the biological advantage of that.
But note that you usually prefer one ear over the other when speaking on the phone. After a while, that can reduce the ability of that ear to hear sounds, especially higher pitched ones.
Add bee and turkey hearing ranges
Question

You need to add bee and turkey hearing ranges :|
ditto 4 me

Answer
It is very difficult to determine the hearing ranges of various animals, let alone an insect like a bee. But if I find those numbers I will add them to the page.

In our section on what we call the 6th sense, or the ability to sense future events, many people tell how they have sensed when something was going to happen. Usually, they just got a "feeling" and then it came true. It is the apparent ability that all people have to sometimes look into the future. Enough people have the experience, that there must be something to it.
But what is interesting is that you seem to be able to sense future events (people coming before they come) through hearing a high frequency. It is hard to explain, but I can give some ideas on it.
We have a lesson on Synesthesia, where people will hear a sound and see an image--usually a color. Is it possible that this frequency triggers an image of the person? But then, what causes the high pitched frequency? Since everyone gives off minute electrical signals, you may be picking up on that, instead of the feeling that other people get when they see something that will happen in the near future.
Some people have indicated that it bothers them to be able to foresee future events. It seems that this ability does not work when a person tries to make it work, so that may be the clue to stopping it. Try to hear that sound and force the issue. It may stifle being able to see people coming.
There is more to humans than we realize. Appreciate any special senses you have.
I hope the explanation and ideas help.
What animal would you hear the best?
Question
November 27, 2007
What animal would you hear the best if your best hearing result was a 0 at 3000Hz?
Paula - USA
14865
Answer
I really don't have a listing of the frequency range of the voices of various animals.
If your hearing was 0 at 3000Hz, you could still hear noises above and below that frequency. If 3000Hz was the lower limit of your hearing, animals that make high pitched sound could be heard--like a mouse--but not those with low pitched sounds--like an elephant. If 3000Hz was the upper limit of your hearing, then the opposite would be true.
On hearing sounds from explosion
Question
November 19, 2007
Can you tell me why when the army are practicing explosions near my house, I hear the high sounds of the explosion before I hear the lower level boom? I have been trying to work out the answer from the information on your website but am still lost to the reasons for this.
Many thanks

Answer
If they are shooting artillery shells, you may be hearing the whistle of the shell going through the air before it explodes. But also, when the explosion occurs, you may hear the sound and then hear and feel the pressure wave from the explosion, which travels differently than the sound wave.
Science Fair project of affect of sound on goldfish
Question
November 15, 2007
Hi,
My name is Veronica and I a sophmore in high school. I am doing a Science Fair on the effect of diffrent sound waves on comet goldfish. I was wondering if you put head phones around the bowl would the goldfish be able to hear it. If you have a suggestion on how I can improve this experiment. Also if you know any one that can help me or is an expert in this field. Thank you for your time.
From,
Veronica

Answer
What sort of effects on the goldfish do you want to study? Are you trying to see what sounds the goldfish can hear? Or how different sounds can affect the goldfish's health?
It is difficult to determine what the fish can hear. I know that if you tap on the goldfish bowl, the fish will sometimes act startled, so you could put headphones on the bowl. Now, a tap is a sudden noise, but what will happen if the fish hears continual noise--like music. Will it act crazy or will it get used to the music?
You might try making noises or playing music a short distance from the bowl. The sound waves will go through the glass and into the water. If the noise bothers the fish, you can recommend that people don't put a radio next to their goldfish bowls.
I hope these ideas help. Best wishes in your project. Let me know what you decide to do and how things turn out.
