TQM in the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO)

by Ron Kurtus (27 May 2008)

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) set up the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) in 1984 to develop anti-ballistic missile technologies. Since these efforts were so costly, and because of the movement toward efficiency and quality from the Total Quality Management (TQM) movement, the DoD directed SDI to implement TQM within their work.

A presentation was made to DoD personnel, outlining the SDIO's concepts on implementing TQM. Although done presented in 1989, this presentation still provides a good outline for implementing TQM in your organization.

Questions you may have include:

This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz near the end of the lesson.
