Can I swtich from journalism to e-learning?

Topic: General

June 2, 2005

I was a freelance journalist for 3 years. I wrote features stories, youth stories etc and now I have switched to elearning and instructional writing. Do journalists normally do that? Is that a big shift in their career? I am confused.

Sakshi - India

You have the writing ability and can make material interesting. That is important in e-learning and instructional writing. It is important to understand the subject matter and to do sufficient research on it.

The difference between journalism and e-learning is somewhat of a different point of view, but I think you should be able to make the transistion.

As far as your career hoes, look to what you enjoy doing, but also look to what have the best opportunities. Either career could be good to follow.

Best wishes in your direction in life.

Wants to start a project

Topic: Solution

March 30, 2005

Hi !
My name is HUNG, I'm from Vietnam and I have some question for you.
My group is going to develop a project about Networking-Elearning.
But because this is the first time we do sth like this so that we don't know where to start !
I know that it's hard to instruct us if I don't show you some particular problems but we are very confused.
Could you give us some advices?
I'm looking forward to hearing from you .

HUNG - Vietnam

First of all, start off small. Do things in modules, so that the project is not overwhelming.

The best thing to do is to start out by writing up your training material. It is best to do this as an outline.

Some people draw things out as a storyboard, but I prefer to put the e-learning in a slide format, like with PowerPoint. This lays out the material and forces you to limit how much information is on each slide.

You can use that PowerPoint presentation as a form of training, since you can put it online. Or you can start with some other e-learning software.

I hope this gives you ideas on how to start your project.

Advantages and disadvantages

Topic: Authoring Tools

December 12, 2004

what are the advantages and disadvantages for the using of "authoring language"?

Eunice - USA

Actually, some of the new versions of programs such as PowerPoint and Dreamweaver make it easier to create usable eLearnign than some of the specialized authoring tools. Of course, tools that are dedicated to eLearning are more sophisticated and allow for better interactions and monitoring.

How to enable JavaScript

Topic: JavaScript Graded Test

November 13, 2004

how can my computer get javascript?

tuon - cambodia

If you are using a common browser, JavaScript should work. In some cases, the browser has disabled JavaScript. Check on what type and version of browser you are using.

For your browser, follow the instructions to enable JavaScript:

Netscape 6.x: Select Edit, then Preferences, then click Advanced. A box appears allowing you to select Enable JavaScript.

Netscape 7.x/Mozilla 1.x: Select Edit, then Preferences, then double-click Advanced, then Scripts & Plugins. Under 'Enable JavaScript for' make sure the Navigator option is selected.

Internet Explorer 4.x: Select View, then Internet Options, then click Advanced. Select an option under Security.

Internet Explorer 5.x: Select Tools, then Internet Options. Then select Security, click on Internet, then Custom Level. Near the bottom of the list, there is an option called Active Scripting (JavaScript). Click Enable.

I hope that helps.

What software should I use?

Topic: Development Steps

August 21, 2004

Dear sir,

i have read "Designing eLearning, CBT or WBT" its really helpful for me, i want to know which software i use to make this CBT or WBT Projects.

Faiza - Pakistan

Although there are some very expensive programs available, many developers are using web-based programs for their eLearning. For some training Microsoft PowerPoint can be effective, but it is weak in testing. Macromedia Dreamweaver with the Coursebuilder extension is good for web-based eLearning. You can also use Flash movies for animations. Also, Macromedia RoboDemo is the easiest to use for training, plus it has good testing capabilities. A more expensive solution is Authorware, but in general you can use less expensive programs.

Wants a fancy alert

Topic: JavaScript Alert

July 6, 2004

Your script is very helpful and easy to use, BUT I have a couple of questions

1.I think it is possible to have several separate lines of text show up in the Alert Button - is this right? what is the code to dod this?

2. Can the text be made BOLD in the Alert button message/"value"?

If the latter cannot be done - is there another of producing an "alert" buton like the Microsoft one but with choice of one's own font/etc? I see such "buttons" in programs - are they popup windows designed to look exactly like the alert button - they dont have any bars of any sort, unlike popups which seem to always have at least the title bar - I am only a very green beginner and may be way out

Thanks in anticipation - AZB

Yes, you can do a lot more than I have listed. Check out JavaScript Kit at to find what you want to do. You may have to do some digging, but you should be able to find it there.

Best wishes with your coding.

Costs in selecting authoring tool

Topic: Authoring

June 30, 2004

Building a cost module for the implementation of Authoring tool,
What cost components do I need to take into account?
Is it only the software package? or are there any hidden costs I should be aware of when approaching vendors?

- South Africa

If your organization is planning on developing eLearning, CBT or WBT, there are a number of factors in selecting an authoring tool. Certainly the cost of the s/w is a factor. How easy is it to use? Are there training costs involved or the cost of learning the program? Also, which tool is the most efficient for the developer to use? One tool may take longer than the other to come to the same result.

An important thing to look at is whether the software company will be in business in a few years. Many have sold authoring tools and later stopped supporting them. You don't want to get stuck with something obsolete. Look at what other companies are using before making a decision.

I hope these ideas help.
