Understanding Fiction Writing

(updated 16 March 2023)

Fiction writing consists of creating stories about imaginary people and events that are presented in such a fashion that they appear real or even larger than life. This type of writing will often cause the readers to become engrossed in the material.

Writers of fiction typically seek to have their work published and to get paid for their writing.

To become successful in fiction writing, you need to know your craft. You need to know how to effectively tell stories and describe people, locations and events. You need to know how to write well, with emotional appeal.

Once you are able to write a good story, you then need to convince someone to publish your material. And finally, you often need to promote your works to get people to buy and read your fiction.

The purpose of these online lessons is to give you a start at improving your fiction writing skills, to show how to sell your writing, and to give tips on a fiction writing career.
