Book Cover Elements

by Ron Kurtus (13 April 2016)

The main elements of a book cover are the front cover, spine, and back cover. Within these elements there are sub-elements.

Questions you may have include:

This lesson will answer those questions.

Front cover

The front cover usually consists of a design, as well as some images. The cover includes the title and name of the author. A subtitle and quotations may be included.

The title and author name should be prominent enough that customers will want to examine the book.

Spine

The spine of the book includes the title of the book and the author name. It also includes a logo or imprint of the publisher of record.

The title should be sufficiently visible for people to select the book in a bookstore shelf.

Books with fewer than 80 pages usually do not have any text on the spine.

Back cover

The back cover usually includes a description of the book, as well as some testimonials. On the lower part of the cover, the publisher is listed, along with a barcode with the ISBN/EAN and sometimes the price of the book.

Information on the back cover is important to entice customers to consider buying the book.
