by Ron Kurtus (revised 11 April 2014)
Once you have decided to start up an independent or self-publishing business, gained initial funding, and establish your business as a legal entity, you can set up shop to get the business going.
To do that, you need a place to work, equipment, and software for publishing. You also should purchase an ISBN block and have a means to print out barcodes. Finally, you should find vendors and support personnel or businesses.
Questions you may have include:
- What equipment and software is needed for publishing?
- How do you get an ISBN block and barcodes?
- What vendors do you need?
This lesson will answer those questions.

- Dreamweaver is used for website design
- Fireworks is used for website graphics
- Photoshop is used for print graphics
- Acrobat is used for PDF files
Of course, there are alternatives to all of these applications.
Knowledge

You also need to be able to convert your manuscript into the various e-book formats, as well as e-book readers.

For many tasks, you may want to job them out to designers, editors, and other contractors. Of course, you need some up-front money to do this.
