Sensing Direction and Distance

Having two ears and two eyes lets you judge the direction and distance of things around you. The brain compares the slightly different signals arriving at each side to work out where something is.

Locating sound

A sound coming from one side reaches the nearer ear a tiny fraction of a second sooner, and slightly louder, than the far ear. The brain uses these small differences in timing and intensity to pinpoint the direction of the source.

Judging distance

Distance is estimated from cues such as how loud a sound is and how its quality changes over distance — a faint, muffled sound is judged farther away than a clear, strong one.

Two eyes for depth

Vision works similarly: because the two eyes view a scene from slightly different positions, the brain combines the two images to perceive depth and distance, an effect called stereoscopic vision. Together, paired senses build a three-dimensional sense of space.
